On my day off of work today, I worked… freelancing a baseball game for The Dispatch and the Rock Island Argus as well as The Ottawa Times covering the Rock Island Vs. Streator class 3A Sectional semifinal game in East Peoria. Streator defeated my alma mater 8-7. This is one of my favorites from the game- sort of a different angle and some layering that I don’t see a lot of in my usual baseball images. In the photo a Streator player on third base is reacting to a dropped catch.

Here’s a photo from shooting the girls state track and field meet today on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. In this picture, Rock Island’s Troy Jackson anchors a second place finish in the 4×200 meter relay. Although Rock Island is definitely not in the Journal Star coverage area, I always like to shoot my old school if I can.

Pat

I shot Peoria Richwoods take on Hillcrest for the class 3A state title game on Saturday afternoon at Carver Arena in Peoria. Richwoods fell to Hillcrest 55-58. I covered everything off the court while two of my co-workers shot game action.
That’s the last of basketball for the season.

I had a great time the other day shooting Richwoods High School junior Matt Elliott for the Journal Star Swimmer of the Year portrait. It was his third year in a row receiving the title. This season he won state in both the 200 meter individual medley and the 100 meter breath stroke, in which he set a new state record. Lucky for me there was a little window looking into the high school’s pool under the water. I had a strobe set up directly above him and was still able to trigger it with a remote transmitter from my position shooting through the glass in the room below the pool. Matt was a great sport about trying a bunch of different poses with his eyes open under the water and getting his medals wet. Anyway, it was a fun shoot and the final product turned out great.
Cheers,
Pat

I shot No. 1 ranked (Peoria) Richwoods High School defeat my alma mater, No. 6 Rock Island High School, 59-53 in a class 3A Sectional final game on Friday night in Ottawa, Ill. It was a great game to watch and shoot- lots of emotion in a small packed gym.

I covered the IHSA State Wrestling championship matches last weekend at Assembly Hall in Champaign. Here are a few of my favorite shots.

I shot Cardinals fans getting autographs and talking with players and staff the other night during an off season fan event. I like the layers in this one.
Cheers,
Pat

I shot the first annual Salt City Bowl today at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson where Hutchinson Community College defeated the New Mexico Military Institute 22-14. Luckily I was one of two Hutch News photographers covering the game so I got some time play around and shoot a little differently than usual.
Cheers,
Pat

Today I got up at 5 a.m. and met one of our sports reporters at the News at 6 a.m. and then drove 3 hours to the Kansas high school 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A state cross country championships in Wamego, KS. I shot eight races- girls and boys in four classes for not only the Hutch News, but also for the other newspapers in our chain. It was a long day, but at least the weather was nice.

Pat

I shot soccer yesterday in some freezing wet weather. My hands could barely move to zoom in and out or try control the plastic bag covering my camera from the elements. Still, I think I came away with some nice frames. I went out and bought some heavy fingerless gloves with mitten covers last night- the only non-camo gloves available in the outdoor section at Walmart.
Best,
Pat
